Can the a/c be replaced in a 1988 Toyota Corolla?

Question

I purchased the car for $450 and the only thing I know is that it doesn't have any freon. My understanding was that you have to convert it to a new system but I don't know anything about that.

Sure anything can be replaced. You either have to have the freeon recharged or buy a new one. It's gonna be spendy if you have to buy the whole thing so you should just see if re-charging it will fix it.
And just remember.....most of these guys are out for the $$$$ So check a couple of places.

Yea, but your going to be looking at some money. Depends on whats wrong,and it would have to be converted over to 134a refrigerant. The compressor your looking at around 2-3 hundred alone. Plus you need the system flushed and put on a vacuum, to get any moisture out. And plus and thing else that might leak on a almost 20yr old vehicle. It's really not worth it in the long run.

What is meant by replaced ?? what exactly is the problem ?? It may be a repair or recharge or some other problem. You don't replace the a /c like replacing an alternator. Give us some details or problems.

A/C is the most expensive system in a car to repair. Often it is more than one part that needs repair, IE: hoses, condensor, clutch, compressor, etc.

Of course it can. ANYTHING can be fixed or replaced in a car. The question is: is it worth it???
