I'm not sure what to do. I don't know what they are because the plant was labeled with a big long scientific name. Basically, I got them Sunday, planted them in sand and added water conditioner. My plants are in my 2.5 gallon aquarium and I have a 10 watt flourescent light bulb that i leave on 10 hrs a day. The water conditioner had phosphate buffer in it which I learned later was bad for plants so I took out as much water as I could, 80-85%, refilled it with regular tap water and put in water conditioner (takes out heavy metals, chlorine, and chloroamines) that didn't contain phosphates. Now when I look at my plants, the leaves are turning brown. I don't know what is wrong or what to do.

Where did you get the plants? Some places like Petsmart will actually sell terrestrial plant that take a long time to die as aquatic plants. Your best bet would be to find out what kind it is and make sure you have the proper requirements. Find out the amount of light it needs, how it prefers to be rooted (some plants can get planted in gravel while other prefer to be attached to driftwood, and still others prefer sand). I personally have two-14 watt fluorescent bulbs in desk lamps on my two and half, and the plants in there are all doing well (where the light requirements for the plant is moderate and it actually grows in a way that suggests too bright a light).

Really, it's hard to say exactly how to improve the growing situation without knowing the type of plant you have.

A 10w bulb on a 2.5 g tank does not sound like too little light, but maybe too much! I hope you have that big long scientific name written down somewhere so you can google it and find out what light levels your plant likes!

Like terrestrial plants, some prefer full light (sun) and some prefer to grow in shadier (less light) conditions. You may need to add a floating plant to provide shade.

Sounds like you need more light. Try getting about 25 watts total and get a bulb which has a spectrum for growing plants.

Do you still have the label with the scientific name?

If not, where did you get these plants? Are they the petco aqua plants? If so they are probably not aquatic plants. Petco mislabels many of their plants as aquatic when they really are not.

2.5 gallon is too small for most plants... your plant will likely die.
just get a java fern.... they're hardy.
