What is some of the best ways for 2 guitarists to be able to get together and write some songs?

When my friend and I get together to jam we can't ever come up with things to play together and we always end up just playing our own little tunes but never can get them to go together

I have about 14 friends that i can get together with and jam. But there are about three of them that I can say that I can write with.
What I have found myself doing is trying to "compete" rather than collaborate, even when trying to learn copy music to play in the band I'm in.
The first thing you, as a musician, can do is to leave your instrument in the case and LISTEN to your friends ideas, noting first the theme, then the style, then the chords then the lyrics. Sometimes it's better to listen to him/her sing it "a capella", assuming that they have words for the piece. Next tab (lead sheet) the chords and lyrics. Next learn the piece as close as possible to the way your friend plays it. Sometimes that opens up more avenues for more parts your friend has ideas for.
Don't be critical of his /her basic form, give it a chance and in time the piece will grow on it's own. Remember this will not happen in one sitting or overnight. I have found my self still going back to projects and ideas, sometimes many years old.
Don't try to "tailor" your or their song in the style of known artists, only say "similar to" while explaining what you're trying convey.

One of you needs to play rhythm and the other play lead. Finding a key to play in together is a good start. Just make a riff or play your own little tune, and have you or him/her come in with a riff or lead part in the same key (obviously).

A lot of new alternative bands nowadays are doing a lot with octaves and playing the same things just in higher or lower positions on the neck.
