My friends parents didn't have to go to work. There's no mail. But why did my parents have to go to work and why did I have to go to school? Why didn't schools have a minute of silence?

Bush declared today a "national holiday" but it is really intended to honor and remember President Ford, whose funeral was held today. All federal offices were closed (including the post office) and so was the stock market. Schools aren't considered federal; that's why you had to go today. Hope this helps. . .

New Years Day? The Day after New Years Day? New Years Eve?

The question was posted on Tuesday, which is NOT a holiday. New Years Day is a public holiday. Business are still open, which means people still work.

There was no mail today because of the Ford funeral. There was no mail Monday because of the holiday observance...no school either.

It is considered a National day of mourning, so only Federal offices recognize it. Schools don't recognize it because it would not be P.C. to do so.
