You want the walls to compliment all the art, so how would you go about choosing a colour?

Almost all art gallery walls are painted white. That's why art galleries are often nicknamed white boxes or white cubes by artists. The reason for this is that white is considered neutral, and a good way to show off different pieces without clashing. The only thing i can think off that may look bad on a white gallery wall are very minimal line drawings on white paper. Those can look faded from a distance, but many artists would frame that kind of art to prevent that. Some artists who get solo shows may also decide to paint the gallery in different colors for their show..but once their show is over, the gallery is repainted white.

Bright red carpet is tough and I would suggest another carpet color, but if you painted over the off-white and made it more pure white, then that could give the room a clean edge to it. (If Ronald McDonald is buying the house you can always paint the walls yellow!) I would consider investing in a new carpet, though if your going on the market
