I am trying to find examples (newspaper stories, magazine articles, etc.) of government funding cuts for nonprofit organizations.

Hello-

Your question is a good one, but fairly complicated. Nonprofit groups are funded in many different ways. Many take no direct government funding and others are given support or grants from different levels of government. For example, the organization I work with occasionally receives funds from the city government to run an after school program. Those city funds come through federal budget lines directly to the city. Some organizations are funded by county or state funds as well.

It is a safe bet that when state governments face budget problems, nonprofits that receive state funding often do as well. You may have some luck looking at state budgets, etc.

I also found Googling "government funding for nonprofits" to have some interesting articles.

I also have to say that painting nonprofits with a broad brush when speaking about funding, or good or bad as some posts have done, is somewhat offbase. Just like for profit businesses, there are a lot of good guys and bad guys. Most nonprofit leaders I know work for the public good and enjoy doing so. I hate to see the bad apples bring us down.

I hope not because most non profit organizations I have dealt with do not need government funding. They are one of the biggest abusers of government handouts that you and I all pay for.I just lost my job because one of these so-called non profits(a 400 million dollar trust fund(endowment) run by a group of rich lawyers, outbid my company on the piece of land we have been farming for the last 8 years. And when they bought the land they immediately sent us a cease and desist order.Had it not been for laws that protect farmers my company would have lost over a million dollars in inventory. So forgive me if I am a little biased in this matter.I do realize that there are many deserving non-profits out there but there are also as many who use loopholes to abuse the system.

One could only dream I guess. No hard data here, but it would be nice to shave a few tens or hundreds of billions off our spending.
