Get rid of the rat and spray and sprinkle baking powder on the area it was in. If that doesn't do the trick, get some cedar chips and put in that area. The cedar chips will absorb the odor, but it will take a few days.

First of all....remove the banquet. Whenever a rat has invaded an area there will be more unless you do something about it. Please don't tell me you fed it rat poison and then it crawled between the walls and died? People complain about cats. Well, I have two great hunters who keep the rodent population under control and I don't use poison. Find the entry, food source (bird feeders are notorious. Funny my neighbors think they're doing a good thing!), and nest. Remove all feces and urine. If possible hose everything down with a lysol solution. Dissenfect everything you can.

If the rat is in an area that you cannot reach - your options are pretty limited to tearing out sheetrock etc. You could air it out with fans until it fully decomposes but that's pretty gross. If it's in the crawl space, I say go crawling and get it out. Then get a good hunter.

Here's a better question: why are you anywhere near a decomposing rat?

Try vinegar in a bowl. Leave that out for a few days; should help neutralize the odor.
