Ovulation and menstruation are not necessarily related to each other as they are controlled by different hormones. This is why some women have difficulty conceiving.

Ideally you ovulate about 14 days BEFORE the start of your period. This allows the egg enough time to become fertilized and attach and secrete hormones to prevent menstruation.

If menstruation occurs soon after an egg attaches to the uterus it can cause the egg to be shed with the uterine lining. Then again some rare women menstruate during pregnancy.

So the answer is: ideally ovulation happens in between periods BUT it may not, it can happen any time. Ovulation can also occur in the absence of menstruation. (For example some women have only a few periods a year or even none and may ovulate more than once between them). You can also menstruate and have no ovulation, referred to as an anovulatory cycle.

On a regular cycle, a woman is more fertile in between her periods. 14 days before her next/14 days after. Good luck on your test!
