You are absolutly right. It seems that more and more people have become shallow. It is the way it is, I think that it was like that before, but people are more vain now than ever. They spend more to become beautiful, or sexy. Plastic surgury is in high demand in this day in age. So really, everyone could be perfect if the wanted. You are truely correct, and you make a great point.

There was a show on 20/20 or 60 minutes some time ago about that very topic. They sent in actors with same qualifications (the uglier person havnig a few extra qualifications sometimes) and the nicer looking person won out each time.
I think it's sad... I continually teach my son that he needs to look at the heart of the individual and not at the exterior - because even the most beautiful person can be ugly in different ways. "Beauty is only skin deep".
I think the only way society will change is by educating our family and friends - and not catering to the businesses that can only identify with the "beautiful people".
There is a FANTASTIC documentary movie called "Blue Eyed", with Jane Elliot) that relates to the topic on many levels. I HIGHLY highly recommend it for anyone - especially educators. You may have seen her on Oprah.

It has probably always been this way. I'm 58 and don't remember it ever being any different.
I notice as I grow older it doesn't seem to be as important to me.
Some people are more superficial than other people and will probably always be that way and I notice it in older people too.
I also notice that a lot of people who are just plain or average like myself seem to be just as prejudiced against the pretty people as some of them seem to be about the rest of us.
I think that deep down most of us know that, deep down, we're all pretty much the same.
I guess it might be nice to be handsom or pretty but I'm fairly happy with who I've become and since I will never be handsom anyway why worry about it. It is what it is.
Just try to love 'em regardless !

I think you are quite correct. Studies, both scientific and non-scientific, have shown that those who are generally considered attractive oftentimes get a job over a higher qualified though lesser attractive candidate. Attractive people make more money for doing the same job, as well. People have been shown to give more money to a more attractive solicitor at the door of their home. Specifically, attractive blondes got more money than either lesser attractive people and even more than equally attractive brunettes.
Some would argue that it's better for the 'bottom line' of the company to hire more attractive workers because they bring in more business. Is that fair? No. Is it reality? Sure is.

I definitely think looks are as important today as they ever were. The only difference is the standards of beauty have changed over the years. If you're considered conventionally beautiful, life really is easier for you in many aspects. It's also harder in others. Most would consider me the all-American beauty, but it's made it much harder to gain respect from my colleagues for my intelligence. It's widely assumed that pretty people don't have to be smart, so, therefore, none of them are. It's very much a catch-22.

Yes, in today's american culture; looks are important. Yet, in other parts of the world; looks don't have much to do with anything. I don't feel that this is a correct way of life. People should not be so jude mental about other people. I feel we all need to look within eachother and discover others true selves.

Yes, sometimes I know I get preferential treatment for the way I look. I'm not saying I'm drop dead model gorgeous but I do sense sometimes that I get some benefits for being cute.

Absolutely. I agree 100% with you. Look at the advertisements--do you see large people? No you see beautiful models both male and female. Beauty vs the beast.

Yeah I concur. It's quite ashame really. If it wasnt for advertisment purposes and I was employing someone, it'd be their personality over their looks everytime.
