As of 2005-2006 the horse who played on Mr. Ed was still living, in retirement of course, but it has had a wonderful owner and care. Horses abound in my area and it is not uncommon to hear of 30 as a good old age. Even horses of 25 that have been severely neglected can live another 10 years, given the proper care and nutrition. What some people don't realize, is how intelligent these animals are. Unfortunately some ranchers use them until unusable and then sell them off to make dog food, when they could just as easily donate tired horses to someone with a heart.
Nowadays we have more horses dying young from the virus passed by mosquitoes, sometimes even when the horse is innoculated. (West Nile Virus)

This really depends on the breed. The larger breeds such as drafts, warmbloods, TBs, will live to about 20-25 years on average, sometimes less. More medium breeds like QH, paint, arabian will usually live longer about 25-35 years on average. And smaller breeds like ponies can usually live well into their 30s. All of this of course depends on the individual, how its kept, the condition of its health, and what its used for. If a horse has been malnourished for a long period of time this will dramatically cut off years on its life exectancy. Also if a horse is worked very hard, like a race horse. It probably won't live as long. This is all due to the strain on the body. Hope this helps you out.

A horses life span is typically 25 years, but I know a couple of horses that have lived to 30 and even 40 years old. But you should stop riding them after about 20 years old.

I've heard and read they can live to be 30 or 40 years old. A vet today told me that he just went out to check on one that was 34 years old. I was surprised to learn that they could live that long.

knew a crossbred mare who lived to be 46, and an english thoroughbred who made it to 35... depends on breed, health, condition, climate, past life style - many factors. i have seen ponies competing in the show ring in their high 20's and loving it! i have also had a horse die of heart attack at 15, and a polo pony die of epilepsy at 12 - anythings possible.
