microderabrasion does the same thing essentially as AHA peels. both encourage cell turnover (therefore a smoother skin surface) by using a sanding instrument or a topical acid, respectfully. microd. is much more expensive but does not leave you as red as an AHA peel can. basically i see it as "downtime" with peels and really none with microd.
i've had both and think they are both fine (as well as the salicylic acid peels.) just a matter of preference. facials will accomplish some small effects if they use AHA or BHA products.
yes, microd. and AHA peels will improve flaws, but you should be using a retinoid and sunscreen daily for best results.

They both improve flaws. Less downtime with Microderm. I have exfoliated with microderm before and used a blue peel (which did not leave me red and frosty) on the same day. A pumpkin peel is good too (by Arc). Both of these procedures blow a facial out of the water - in a facial you can take most of the products home with you and are only good if you use them everyday. With a peel you have to go to a professional and you see instant results. A peel is uncomfortable but if it becomes to unbearable the esthastician can neutralize it with water and you only have to leave it on for like 1 minute and 30 seconds. And the entire time they will rub your face where it is burning or itching the most.

Microdermabrasion is essentially hardcore exfoliation. Use a foot scrub on your face if you can handle it - and the results are the same.
AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) Peels use Glycolic or Lactic Acid.
Effects will depend on the percentage of the solution used on the skin type and condition. Generates firmer, younger skin with new cells.
BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) Peel - Salicylic Acid helps clear blemishes and minimize pores.
You can buy AHA and BHA kits online for cheaper than one Spa treatment. One kit cost under $100 for the equivalent to 20+ peels. One session is $125. It's not rocket science.

I've tried both and love the former. It penetrates your skin, deeper into the dermis and gives your face a rejuvenated look that lightens your blemishes and leaves a glow. Peels are supposed to achieve that too but it feels more 'painful" and doesn't last as long. Both are meant to improve flaws
