Much more expensive. You will have to deal with emissions and many other factors. Cars sold in Europe have many important details different from cars in the U.S. Even if the purchase price may be slightly lower, the hassle and any shipping or tax on it will make it much worse than simply buying one in your country.

If you live in Europe, or can fly across from Ireland or Britain cheaply & check it out, & then have the option to bring it home on a ferry, then, yes, it is cheaper.

To import it from further abroad - say outside the EU, can be more costly. Specify the basics important to you, like fuel type, engine size, left-hand drive, speedometer(km or miles), sunroof, and be sure why you need those - you might need unleaded diesel only because it's more available locally, for example. Be aware that if you are buying a car in a mild climate, and running it in, say, the UK, it might well be worth talking to a local garage about the undercoating - salt in colder climates can erode an unprepared car from below.

If you are going to check it out in person, don't bother trying to turn up hours early & surprise them. You'll only find that you have to waste that time while they finish installing headlights, putting in fuel, replacing tyres, etc. Tell them you expect X Y Z & will be there at 15:00 or whatever.

If you are impatient, you'll wind up test-driving a slightly more expensive model they happen to have ready while yours is being prepared for the road ... and unless you are a robot, you'll be very tempted to buy that one instead!

One other caveat - I have a friend who at some expense had someone in Berlin send him over a Kraftwerk album. They took a lot of trouble to find him an English-language one. He already had that - it was the original he wanted to hear! Think about why you particularly want an import - maybe somebody near you already did all of that and the log book proves it - they might want to sell & only have to drive it to you locally instead. Or not! Good luck!

You might be able to find an american spec over in germany and have it shippind back. 2 Versions are made over there in Germany.... I was there the last 4 years...... you have the european spec and the american spec, you dont have to change anything on the american spec, it is ready to goto the states, it will cost you around $1200 to ship it back. I shipped my 98 Blazer back from Mannheim to Baltimore for $1200.

more expensive I would say ,all of the smog/polution equipment that they do not use has to be installed here(due to importation regulations) before it can be driven legal it has to pass emissions
standards of the U.S. as if you bought it here as new. It would have to go to a dealership for a retrofit of the parts[reinspected to pass requirements] spend some exuberant amount of cash to clear customs, reinspection, and the DMV to plate it.
it's not worth the aggravation it will cause or the cost !
