the video settings may be set too high. hit the power button ONCE on the computer, if you wait a few minutes does the computer shut off? if so, then it was fully booted into windows correctly, and you just couldn't see it on the screen. this can be caused by the resolution or refresh rate being set too high.
what you can do is boot into safe mode. do this by turning on the computer, then BEFORE you see the windows load screen keep tapping the F8 key, this should pop up an options screen that lets you select safe mode, boot to that and log in. (Note: since its a laptop you may have put it into standby by hitting the power button, you'll basically have to hold the power button down for 4 seconds to completely shut off the computer, then turn it back on and keep hitting F8. if you resume from standby i dont think you can get to safe mode.) if you can see everything OK in safe mode, then go to start then control panel then system. then click on the hardware tab, then device manager. hit the plus sign next to display adapaters, right click on the display adapter listed there and click "uninstall" if it asks "are you sure?" hit yes. then close everything and go to start->shut down and restart
when you reboot you should be able to see the screen, log in and it will redetect the video card, when its done if it asks to reboot hit OK. after it reboots your settings may be wrong, so just go to start->control panel then display. click on settings and set the resolution to something reasonable (1024x768 or 1280x1024 depending on your monitor, usually)
hope this helps

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
