I wonder, how much the crime rate has risen since they stopped them? I was glad to see that that's how they chose to punish Sadam, maybe it could start a trend. I personally think that the death penalty is WAY underused in America anyhow, I think child molestors as well as murderers should recieve that as their sentence. I live in Southern Illinois, close to Benton which is where they hung Charlie Berger in 1967, publicly, the nuece is still on display. If they brought public hangings back do you think that the crime rate would drop dramattically?

I think it would put fear into the criminal and if a few public displays of punishment maybe the crime rate would drop. We need to enforce the laws we have and not be afraid to punish the offender.

Sure, along with Crucifixion, electrodes attached to the privates and how about just clubbing the stupid idiot to death!! A lot of people in Death Row in your very own state were found to be innocent of the crimes committed once they used DNA evidence on them! Do you still want to fry them? Or perhaps we should just take every tenth person and execute them for things they may have done that we don't know about or have yet to think of doing?
And child molestors? Forget it! As much as I agree those bastards should be killed it won't wash with the Supreme Court. When they allowed the return of the Death Penalty in the late '70s one thing they forbid executions for was rape or any sexual crimes. You're out of luck there. Crime is generally related to how many people you have, and what's easy to steal or get away with doing. Public executions won't convince anyone already planning to do something. It will merely be a ghoulish amusement for yet another person addicted to "bread and circuses" Ave, Caesar!!

You could find answers to your questions with a little research. Public hangings were not a deterrent by any reasonable measure.
Taking a person's life is a profoundly disturbing step that is not taken lightly by any government. It is also not the cause for titillation and spectacle. Those that flock to the video of the hanging are sick and in need of counseling; it is barbaric to rejoice in the death of another, even when that person committed heinous crimes.

Some would say no and cite statistics from fifty to sixty years ago. However, the dynamics of crime has changed today and we as Americans are visual individuals. If the execution is public yes it will deter crime for some. To me even a 10% reduction is better than what we have now.

Bring them back. Put the fear of commiting a crime back to the people. Would stop alot of crimes before they happened. I also liked how quick they carried out the sentence. Not like right now where you spend 10-20 years on death row having the american taxpayer supporting them....

I am very conservative. I am against public hangings. But i think a condemned person should get one year to overturn their ruling .After that their sentence should be carried out. We have guys dying of old age on death row. 25 years is ridiculous.

Uh, NO!
They don't work correctly every time and could be cruel and unusual punishment.
Also, if the death penalty was overused, there could be people who were wrongly convicted of a crime they did not commit and killed wrongly because of it.

Hello,
I would love to bring back public hangings.
But first, we need to hang the Do Gooders and Anti Family, Pro Save the Murderer crowd first. Let's eliminate all the liberal lawers and the ACLU by public hangings.
Once we do away with them, we can really proceed with the true capital executions of real criminals.
Does this sound good to you?
It does to me...
Hope this helps you............... : - O

Not sure but lets give it a try. By the way I agree with child molesters should be put to death. It is proven they can not be rehabilitated. Why is everyone so eager to protect them and their rights, what about our children!

Most killers do not think they will be caught, that is, if they think at all. Did you know that when there were public executions, pickpockets worked the crowds.
