Any cheap places to spend a 9 p.m. 'til 6 a.m. in the Cities while waiting for a bus? I'm not concerned about getting a fancy place and don't want a motel unless it's like $15 a night. Don't the YMCAs let you rent rooms or beds to stay overnight? What about hostels?

Yeah, Cities, the only 'cities' with a capital 'C.'

The Grayhound stations I know are the one on University Ave in a kinda sketchy part of town (but some good cheap food -- yummy pho) and downtown Mpls, near the arena. You'd have to check with gray hound to see what the rules are about hanging out at the station all night. If you are in downtown Mpls, go to Pizza Luce. Its cheap and open late and they will let you nurse a coffee for a long time.

I know in winter there are some city bus lines that go all night and if you are quiet about it, drivers will let you ride all night.

I've only heard of one hostel in Mpls and it is near the Art Institute, not really anywhere near anything. There is a YMCA and a YWCA downtown, not sure about their room rental situation. Google it and call.

I might post on Craigslist. It is popular here and if you're comfortable with it, I bet you could find someone to let you crash for free.

Good luck.

the bus station in Mpls is downtown near Loring Park and it isn't the safest......I don't think there is anything cheap like that down there. You would be better off staying put right in the bus station. If you have the computer access to write this question, I would look up the address of the bus station and then look up the Y and it's address and see if they are close at all in distance. Or look up hostel's and see if there is one close. I am betting not. Good luck to you.......
You could go online and do priceline and bid 20 bucks on a room and see if anyone takes it.

A hostel will probably be the cheapest option, but if you're waiting for a bus layover, you might want to check what's within walking distance of the bus station before making too many plans. Research hostels in the city you're going to be in, and call ahead to make sure there's space available for the time you'll be there, or you might end up staying in the bus station overnight, and that's kind of scary.

I find that the bench at the station can be pretty comfortable if you cover yourself with newspapers.
