I was raised that you didn't take the tree down till after January 6. January 6th is the twelfth day of Christmas also know as "Little Christmas", the Epiphany, Three Kings Day, etc. This is the day the wise men supposedly reached Jesus after following the star of Bethlehem. No one seems to know about this mini-Holiday anymore . . . this tradition seems to have been forgotten over the years. I myself, don't really like my tree up that long anyway . . . I like taking it down New Year's Day especially if the tree is real and getting dried out. Out with the old and in with the new! And there's usually nothing going on New Year's Day anyway, why not get it over with?

We don't put ours up until Christmas Eve (the annual tree massacre)--actually we are selectively thinning an overmature overcrowded stand and top a tree, using the lower bows for outdoor decoration. We keep it watered with the sugar, aspirin and clorox and have even had them push new growth but after a month (we have Christmas depending on when relatives can attend and that can last a week or two), it really has to go.

The traditional day to take down a Christmas tree is January 6th, which is the day of the three kings. However, if it's getting terribly dry you should take it down now.

I usually leave it up until after New Years. Once the holidays are over and done with, I get tired of looking at it. I have an artificial tree, so the tree getting too dry is not an issue with me.

It's funny that you ask that. I work for a newspaper and our question of the week was that same question. To answer, 60.9% take their tree down before New Years, and 39.1% after
