Sorry 'bout the mistaken rating (sheesh, I wish this stinkin' program would quit jumping the screen).
Your squeak is obviously not in the carpet but in the flooring underneath, so will obviously need to remove the carpet to get at the flooring, or put up with it, or remember where not to step.

First locate where exactly the squeek is. Then measuer from the wall to the squeek. Then go under the house, and take the measurements again to find the squeek from underneath the house, or basement. Then between the floor joists take measurements you should then cut cross braces to stick inbetween the joists where the squeek is. Put sub floor adhesive on the tops of the cross braces. And then toe-nail the cross braces in the same spot as the squeek...and that my friend will fix your problem without even removing any carpet. Or try putting extra subfloor adhesive on the squeeky joint.

Check out Holmes on Homes, and he tells you that it's not the carpeting but the hardwood underneath. The support underneath, or it's the way the hardwood was put down itself, not supported enough or reinforced properly I believe.
I trust him and watch all his shows, and I heard he now has a book out, so I am going to pick that up for sure.
Good Luck! Hope I helped somewhat.
Charlene
PS: There's no getting around it, you have to pull up the carpet!
