What are our best options? I think we should put in a boiler bypass system with a seperate pump to circulate the water during cold weather. Drain the pipes, but winter summer hook-up needs water in pipes?

introduce glycol to the heating system. Glycol is an anti freeze. You only need a 30% mixture.

Me I am going to be a smart guy and run a 20% anti freez solution in the pipes. I mean straight water will always freeze. I am assuming you are referring to a wood fired outdoor boiler????

Good Luck!

You have a good idea but for now, fire up the boiler to stop the freezing, this summer look into something more substantial.

moving water is harder to freeze, but it will freeze if it gets cold enough. If you drain the water, you have solved the problem

Try RV antifreeze into your water system. It is nontoxic like automotive antifreeze and won't kill you or your pets when drained out. Wal-Mart sells it and any RV dealer will have it, too, if they have a parts department.
