I have always been a fan of Dell. You can even purchase refurbished ones from their website. Although costly, think about buying the gold warranty. If she has problems, she can call them in a panic, rather than you...especially if she is going to school far from home.

Good luck.

IBM Thinkpads, T30 or T40 can be purchased off lease for about $400 - $500 with the IBM warranty. These are top rated laptops with all the bells and whistles costing $3000+ new. They have the best LCD and sound, and the T40 boasts 8+ hour battery life. Most include WIFI, DVD, CD-RW drives.

I bought my Dell back in March and love it. It was perfect for my college education. I would recommend Dell for sure. They are affordable, especially if you don't want all the fancy stuff, just the basics for school.

A low-end Dell will be just fine.

The Dell Inspiron(tm) 1300 is just £329 :)

I agree that Dell has some very good low end laptops if she's not into gaming.
