Any ideas to fix it for the time being, as we can't really afford to replace the entire roof right now.

Retar it. Or put a cap on the crown and then retar it.

Even as a quick fix, I would not use roofing tar. I would buy some rubber membrane roofing material and cut a strip of it to cover the hole. Glue it on with the compound that they sell with the roofing.

This is a waste of materials, but will give a much better repair. I think it is worth the waste.

The reason is that it is too likely that some rain will get into the crack. Roofing tar seems to either not flow well enough to get into every crack or if flows so much the it fails to keep the crack sealed. It seems to never be in the range between those two extremes.

If you have to use some kind of caulking, use a urethane based one, not a tar based one. They are very much stronger and have better flow characteristics.

Go to Lowe's Menards or Home Depot and buy a can or two of roofing tar. Trowel it into the crack. smooth the edget to seal like you are frosting a cake. If you want it to match just pour some similar gravel on it and press it into the fresh tar. A simple crack a single crack is not indicative of the entire roof needing to be replaced. Good Luck!

patch it with roofing cement, just trowel it right out of the can and spread it evenly. You can scatter some gravel over it to hide the patch
