It would be useful to know more about your tank as there are several options depending on the setup. One of the best options for biological filtration is to have plenty of live rock in the tank and good water circulation. Mechanical and chemical filtration is optional and if you don't have a sump a canister filter is ideal for this. Mechanical filtration however can work against the concept of live rock filtration. for more information on this google the term "FOWLR". The combination of a good skimmer and live rock filtration is probably the best choice of them all. Coralife, Octopus and CPR all make good hang on back skimmers for tanks without a sump.

Hope that helps

I am preferential to canister filters like the fluval series, but it depends on what you want, what kind of fish/corals/etc you will keep, and what type of substrate you'll be using.
