Ok, let me give you the details....My husbands family lives about 300 miles away from us. Upon visiting them this christmas I took home a slew of old family photos. His mom just had them in a big box and didnt care what I did with them...well, I took them home hoping to make photo albums for her that way she could acctually see the pictures in staed of storing them in boxes. Here is my problem...I would like to give all the originals back to her, keep some copies of my husbands pics for myself and also be able to put some sort of album together for his brother ( two of them)...Is there anyway i can do something that doesnt cost me a ton of money, and doesnt involve alot of cutsy stickers and special supplies? I need some orginal ideas .... do i just make 1million color copies of every pcture?? help me!

If you make a layout, you should be able to take that page to a copy center and they can make great copies for you. Then you can decide who keeps the originals and who has a copy. If more family members want them in the future you are better off keeping the originals yourself. As for not using Cutesy stickers you can group them in subjects or any order that suits them. You could double mount one on a page, choosing one that is a favourite or is the main focus of that grouping and single mount the others. If they are black and white use black as a background and double mount white and black. You can make it look nice with good titles and lettering.

I saw an idea on T.V. the other day it is not scrap booking but you can take a few of the pictures and make copies or just use the orginalsand put them on antique plates. You can buy the plates really cheap at any local thrift store amvets goodwill or any store like that and you can blow up the picture and cut out to fit the inside of the plate and then hang them on the wall sometime it is cheaper then frames

There are ways to make a cute scrapbook for relatively cheap, but there's some things you don't want to cut corners on. For example, you're better off using acid-free adhesive and paper. It won't discolor your photos and is worth the extra bit of money you'd spend on it. Page protectors are also a good idea; You'd be surprised how many people want to flip through your book and point at things with dirty, greasy fingers (I learned this from experience!) You can buy acid-free paper in printer size, and print out some captions and decorations on your computer. http://cp.c-ij.com/english/scrapbook/index.html has some free, printable patterns and decorations specifically for scrapbooking! Paper will also occasionally go on sale at craft stores like Michael's, and sometimes with the right paper, you wouldn't need any other decorations at all! Since it sounds like you're making a few of these, why don't you even try making the book itself? http://www.american.edu/IRVINE/erika/materials.html is a good website that has specific instructions on how to make your own scrapbook.

Hope this helps! Scrapbooking can get pretty expensive, but there are ways to get around the pricey items in the stores.

1. you have been given something very precious!
2. scan them into the computer. If you have the expertise, you can retouch the photos to restore them to almost like new, some scanners can do it automatically. Then burn them onto a CD or DVD. Make a copy for everyone in the family that is interested and give it to them.
3. print out the photos onto photo paper, choose the ones that you really like, and you think your MIL would like to look at often, you can resize them if you like.
4. go to a scrapbooking store in your area, you can do a search online for this. Bring your newly printed photos to the store, and either take a class in beginning scrapbooking, or ask the people at the store for assistance. They will be able to explain to you all about acid free lignan free papers and adhesives, and such, that will provide the best chance of them to be preserved so they can be handed down to future generations. You can do some really gorgeous non-cutesy scrapbook pages, for not a lot of money that will be very artsy. There are also a lot of great books on beginning scrapbooking as well as magazines. It sounds like you might like one of the magazines entitled "Simple Scrapbooks" There are also a lot of books on making heritage scrapbooks available as well, which would be approriate as these are older family photos
5. after you have the scrapbook pages done, again, scan them into the computer, and burn another CD/DVD, make copies for all who want them.
6. present your MIL with a very nice scrapbook, as well as 2 CD discs with the photos and a digital backup of her book.
7. your DH and his brothers might want their own books as well, you could print out the scans of the pages and make them little mini albums, or once you get hooked on scrapping, just make them each their own book for holiday and birthday presents. At the very least, they would have the CD/DVD disk of all the photos, and the pages you did for your MIL....

There are hundreds of websites out there that can be very helpful as well. If for no other reason to give you ideas, tips, new techniques....

good luck and have lots of fun!!

here are a few websites I like:

Why would you give her back the originals, she just unloaded them on you, she does not want them. I recommend buying one of those scrap booking books (the ones with black pages and just glue them in), sort the pictures by age and label the pages with pictures accordingly. This is a very time consuming project so don't go crazy making copies, try and work with what you have.
