i have had my ears pierced for years, so am not worried about them closing. i read somewhere to dissinfect teh earring and put it back in, but i was not sure if that was only to keep a new piercing from closing. Also, the ear does not hurt but when i took my earing out there was pus on the post and if was slightly red. Should i wear 14k gold earings or leave them out until it heals?

If you leave your earings out and they are as ticked as you say they are, they will close. Trust me on this one, an angry piercing is as good as a fresh piercing. I'm assuming you were pierced at god-knows-that's-way-too-small, so I'd suggest go to your local piercing shop and get yourself some titanium labret studs or CBRs, because titanium tends to be best. Yes, they do make real body jewelry for people pierced at god-knows-that's-way-too-small sizes, it is called 18ga, but a 16ga or 14ga will do you better.

Just get better quality earings, and better quality does NOT include any "regular" earing with the butterfly backing *or any other backing of the general design* I do not care how much they cost, they are all poorly made and probably scratched on the post by the time you get them. Do I need to go into why scratches on the post is a bad idea? Bacteria grows in the scratches and they can and do irritate the piercing.

Go to a rel piercer and they can give you the best advice. Doctors are awesome and all, but they tend to be body-mod retarded *i was told once by a doctor to immediately take out my infected navel ring when the appt I had wasn't for two days...* so piercer is the best idea.

If anyone uses the term "hydrogen peroxide" or "rubbing alcohol" in their instructions for what you should do about your ears, leave and don't go back, because they are idiots.

I would switch to a hypo-allergenic earring. Like surgical steel, or nickel free earrings. First clean your ear real good with good ole soap and water, and maybe peroxide, then maybe some triple antibiotic ointment before you switch your earrings. I wouldn't put the dirty ones back in my ear if I were you.
