According to legend, the Holy Lance (also known as the Spear of Destiny, Holy Spear, Lance of Longinus, or Spear of Longinus) is the lance that pierced Jesus while he was on the cross. The Biblical account itself does not give a name to the spear, nor does it otherwise support the legends surrounding this artifact.

The lance is only mentioned in the Gospel of John (19:31-37) and not in any of the Synoptic Gospels. The gospel states that the Romans planned to break Jesus' legs, a practice known as crurifragium, which was a painful method of hastening the death during a crucifixion. Just before they do so, they realized he was already dead and that there was no reason to break his legs. To make sure he was dead, an unnamed soldier stabs him.

... but one of the soldiers pierced his side with a lance, and immediately there came out blood and water. John 19:34
The phenomenon of blood and water was considered a miracle by Origen (although the water may be explained biologically by the piercing of the pericardial sinus). Christians generally see in it a deeper meaning: it represents the Church issuing from the side of Christ just as Eve was taken from the side of Adam

The name of the soldier who pierced Christ's side is not given in the Bible but in the oldest known references to the legend, the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus (of uncertain date, possibly 5th or 6th century), the soldier is identified with a centurion and called Longinus (making the spear's "correct" Latin name Lancea Longini).

A form of the name Longinus also occurs on a miniature in the famous Syriac manuscript of the Laurentian Library, Florence, illuminated by one Rabulas in the year 586. In the picture, the name LOGINOS is written in Greek characters above the head of the soldier who is thrusting his lance into Christ's sid. This is one of the earliest records of the name, if the inscription is not a later addition.

Later Christian tradition, harking back to the novel The Spear by Louis de Wohl (1955), further identifies him as Gaius Cassius Longinus.

My heavens, I never have been flashed, but I did unintentionally flash a few folks once. I was in the hospital some time back and decided to take a stoll to the vending area. Well, I wasn't thinking about what I was wearing and, let's just say that those hospital gowns don't leave a lot to the imagination on the backside. The nurse came up from behind me and put a blanket over my shoulders . . . I was wondering why it was a little drafty back there!

Yes this is one of the more interesting stories to me.

Good info others have mentioned to add to that I just found this site.

One of the biggest stumbling blocks when researching this subject is the roman senator named Gaius Cassius Longinus who was involved with Caesar's assassination. clearly not the same person as the centurion.

There is a book entitled The Spear of Destiny By Trevor Ravenscroft.

This book tells about Hitler and his obsession with the occult and the spear. I have a copy of it and its quite a read.

Supposedly many conquerors and leaders either possessed it or sought to possess it like, Mauritius, Constantine, Barbarosa, Napoleon, Hitler and others..

Maybe it's a spear, possessed by Jack Black and the guys from Tenacious D, along with the pick of destiny.

According to Arthurian Legend, the spear of destiny was the weapon that had wounded the Fisher King that the grail knights encountered in one of their many quest to find the Holy Grail.
And yes it was the spear that pierced the side of Jesus when he was dying on the cross.

Honestly, I thought it was a myth but it seems it is real and many people have sought to attain it. Hitler had a piece of it during his reign for instance. Its origin is that it was supposed to be the spear that pierced Jesus's side to finally kill him while he was being crucified.
