good custom pc for $200 to 300? aint going to happen. unless you go with really lowend parts and even then I doubt you can squeeze in to the $300
what is the computer used for?
I jsut built a custom gamming pc. not the top of the line but its in the upper percentage of good. and that was $1500 using good parts.
you should be able to build one for about $500 to $600.
got www.newegg.com they have some of the best prices and the support there is the best. this will give you an idea of how much you can look at in spending on a custom built computer.

well if you want to make a new cheap computer ,you should first go around your neighbour hood,or ur friendly neighbour hoood dump, walk about and collect allt he pc parts u can,im pretty sure u can get a complete a computer in like 1 hrs. or just find a good motherboard,. buy a 300gb hard drive 80$-100$, dvd burner about 50$? ATi graphics card ,128mb i use one,.lol, about 60$,umm thats about all i think you need.and RAM 512 mb got cheaper ,1GB is kinda expensive. use ur old ones. IF you go to shool, if no1 one is looking go into tur pc lab and take a few parts,(Stealing is bad) one of my friends took a whole pc from the school ,it was a ghetto school no1 cared.,most likely people trow away their computers ,drie around u wil find something, look at the garbage they throw out,

Try eBay. It's loaded with Custom PCs built by gaming geeks and now selling for a fraction of the cost to get rid of them. There's always a newer faster board coming out!

Your not going to get a very good pc for 200-300 but you can get an extremely satisfying acer desktop from www.buy.com the prices are competitive as it gets there and acer is a very good name brand that doesnt price like it is. (For example i have an acer aspire 3000 series laptop that was struck by lighting... it still works but is a tad handicaped because it killed the sound card which is good considering it was a direct hit with no surge protection at all!) Also you may want to try dell they have computers for 200-300 but like i said you wont get much from anywhere for 200-300 (or at least not by my standards) anywhere sorry. (Try used!)

you can find an old motherboard that accepts a socket 370 cpu(you can get a 1GHz PIII for $40) another $100 for an Abit or Asus motherboard which would leave plenty of money for RAM.
it wouldn't be the best system but it would be more than functional..
