Century old sectarian tensions between Shiite and Sunni Muslims, and to a lesser extent Kurds is mainly what's driving the violence in Iraq. That conflict, plus basic traits of human nature such as greed and corruption leads to criminal elements as well, similar to what was seen in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Saddam Hussein and his Ba'ath Party held Iraq together with an "iron fist". Now that he's no longer in power (and dead), Iraq is falling apart. But to answer your question -- no, people over in Iraq are not nuts.

Before judging the people in Iraq you must understand their culture and religion. For an American who is uneducated they might seem like evil nuts, but if you delve deeper into this issue you will find that they are human and aren't that much different than peoples from other religions.
There is a civil war in Iraq and at time of war people fight. Have in mind that we also had a civil war (1961- 1965).
Now I'm not saying that they aren't wrong (or crazy), all I'm saying is that it is important to know the facts before you end up prejudging.

I like the explanation that the middle eastern gentlemen from Newsweek gives. He said to understand Islam you must understand that there is no single person or group in charge, no "Muslim Pope". Instead anyone can promote themselves as a religious leader and if you can get enough people to follow you then you're in business. Add to that no separation between church and state. It's as if nutjobs like Jerry Falwell, Pat Roberston and Ted Haggard not only had the ability to con large numbers of people out of their money and their votes but also had the ability to make laws and have their own army. Think about that the next time you hear about teaching "Intelligent Design" in schools or about "faith based initiatives" where churches get to hand out tax money. Iraq and other countries in that part of the world are excellent examples of what happens when religion and government get merged. Many early immigrants to the U.S. left Europe to get away from that situation there. And that's why our founding fathers specifically prohibited government establishing a religion. We are not a Christian nation, we are attempting to be a nation of enlightened citizens who weigh facts and make intelligent decisions.

Yes, they are nuts, and worse. Wouldn't you be? As I have stated in the past. The muslim society is the very worst society the world has ever seen. That is a fact.
