Being rich is not an absolute requirement for getting into an elected position in government, but it helps. Many Senators either have rich families or have made money themselves. But no matter how much money you have personally, it does cost money to run an election campaign, and many politicians--especially members of Congress and Senators spend a good deal of their time raising money. It does not really matter what you take in college. There are lawyers, doctors, clergy members, teachers, businessmen (among other professions) in Congress. Good luck.

Start in local politics so you learn what it's like to grease the palms of people and groups that you don't like, but need their votes. I'm not being facetious, it's really the truth. That's why so many politicians change their view on many subjects during their career.
The senate is considered the second most powerful branch in the country, and will need serious money to even be considered. Naturally, a large part of that money must come from groups that you have made friends with throughout your political career.

Being an elected official is VERY expensive to break into. The best way to go is to start with a military career. Follow up with a law degree.
As far as money is concerned, you'll need millions to pay for campaigning and for bribes.
Good luck.

you need money, but you can get this by being a good fundraiser and having a good campaign committee.
some folks who know they want to be politicians major in political science. but you don't need that degree. major in whatever you like. what really counts is that you are smart, concerned about your constituents (people you represent) and that people vote for you.

Most politicians start out as law students who begin by working as volunteers for current politicians.

You'd better have a pocketful of money or be in the pocket of someone with a pocketful of money....otherwise your dream will never come true.
