On Saturday I took 2 seperate home pregnancy tests. They were both positive. The next day, I started to bleed very lightly so I went to the hospital and the doctor said that I was NOT having a Miscarriage, and the bleeding was most likely caused from my cervix, or even my period as it was about due, and to see my Dr on Tuesday. So today I went to my Dr and they did a urine Pregnancy test. and it was NEGATIVE. My DR doesnt believe that I am having a period because it is too light and that the bleeding would not have anything to do with the pregnancy or miscarriage. He told me that a Urinary Tract infection could cause a false positive or even too much protein. I researched HPT's and according to manufacturers the only thing a home pregnancy test will detect is HCG. He said I could have had a early pregnancy miscarriage but he doesnt believe thats what happened. He told me to wait a week or so and let things settle down and I could have a blood test then. Any help would be appriciated

I have had something similar to this happen. I took 3 home pregnancy tests. They all came out positive. I scheduled an appointment at planned parent hood for another pregnancy test. The day I Had my appointment I started bleeding slightly. When they gave me my test results they said that slight signs of HCG showed up but the test was negative. They didn't really explain it in detail but they said that my egg was fertilized but never attached in the uterus and just kept going. So pretty much what they were saying was a miscarriage. But she told my that the HCG levels were so slight that they were barley detectable. Hope this helps.

That makes no sense to me. He didn't order a blood pregnancy test? That should be standard procedure. And I've NEVER heard of a urinary tract infection causing a false positive on a pregnancy test. Even if you HAD an infection, you wouldn't be bleeding out your VAGINA, the blood would be in your pee. He doesn't sound like a very good doctor to me. I wouldn't trust the test he gave you, either, at this point. They probably screwed that up, too.

Get a blood test. The only thing that will cause a positive pregnancy test is the presence of HcG, which means you are pregnant, on some type of fertility drug, or a male with cancer of the testicals.

I had some spotting with my first pregnancy....he is four and fine!

Good Luck!

I have not had that happen, but a friend of mine has. I would wait at least a few days and see what happens. If you had just drank a lot the level of HCG in your urine could have been to week to read properly. If you do not have a normal period in a week or so take another test. Good luck.

ive never had that happen it seems really strange id be confused too prenancy tests do detect hcg hormone which is usually cause by pregnancy. but alot of women spot during pregnancy which is normal usually the first time or two its bright then the rest if they spot its usually brown from old blood in the cervix and alot of women can miscarry and not know it if they arent very far along but just a few weeks. i miscarried my baby at 10 wks but i knew i was miscarring. that doesnt make sence tho your test should of been accurate if there is hcg in your urine. ive had 4 pregnancys 2 life births another on the way and my miscarrage. i looked on the net about a false positive and this is all i found but you too 2 tests still makes no sence to me
. Improper testing
Improper testing can lead to false positive results. When taking a home pregnancy test, it is very important to read the directions before testing. Your home pregnancy test instructions will specify when test results should be interpreted and when test results are no longer valid. Some tests will produce a faint positive test result if read after the instructed time. You should use a clock or a watch and record the time you perform the test and read results at the instructed time. Guessing how long it has been since performing the test can lead to false results. Three minutes can seem like twenty minutes and vice versa when you are anxiously waiting to find out if you are expecting.

Another problem that commonly occurs when it come to testing is going back to "double check" your results. Disappointed with a negative result at the 3 minute (or 5 minute interval depending on the test), a woman may go back to look again to see if maybe she didn't see that positive the first time. Some women will go as far as digging that test out of the trash "just to be sure". This is probably one of the biggest causes of false positive results. Home pregnancy tests should always be read at the instructed time for accurate results.

2. Evaporation lines
Some home pregnancy tests have been described by women as having an evaporation line. If you stare at and inspect a home pregnancy test closely, it is possible with some tests to see where the testing line is. When urine runs across the test strip it may briefly change color as part of the testing process thereby helping the woman locate the test are even further. In order for the test to be positive it should change color and have a colored line at the determined testing time. With some tests, you will be able to see what can best be described as a watermark, much the same as you see on a US dollar bill when turned to the light. If there is no color to it or you have to grossly manipulate it to the light in order to observe a line, it could be an evaporation line. Retesting in a few days or using a digital test is recommended.

3. Home pregnancy test interference
Certain medications such as phenothiazine can interfere with test results. Women receiving hCG therapy to treat a luteal phase defect or other fertility problem should consult their doctor as to accuracy of home pregnancy tests and when testing should be performed. Occasionally urine can be contaminated with blood or gross amounts of protein leading to inaccurate results.

4. Certain medical conditions can lead to false positive results.
If you receive a positive result from a home pregnancy test it is important to follow up with your doctor for medical care. Although it is not common, certain rare medical conditions can cause positive results on a home pregnancy test. Certain forms of cancer, such as choriocarcinoma (an extremely rare type of cancer usually found in the uterus) can cause an elevation in hCG levels as well as certain types of breast, ovarian or testicular cancer leading to a false positive result.

5. Defective pregnancy test
Expired tests or faulty home pregnancy tests can also lead to false positive results. Always check the expiration date before testing to assure accurate results. Keep in mind, even with the highest quality control, an occasional defective test may occur.

I have gotten a false positive before. It sucks but those tests are not as accurate as they say they are. Good luck.
