If you're looking to do some call-center style work, here are 4 legitimate companies that are hiring for 'at home' workers, as featured in a recent MSN Money article:

Alpine Access (http://www.alpineaccess.com/)
LiveOps (http://www.liveops.com/)
Willow CNS (http://gowillow.com/)
West at Home (http://www.workathomeagent.com/)

I don't think that these companies would be illegitimate if MSN Money is featuring them. Just for the heck of it, I read up on some of these companies and this is what you need to know.

They do appear to be legitimate companies but they are NOT offering get rich quick jobs. You know how the saying goes... if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. Well it applies here. Essentially these companies provide the opportunity for people to take calls in their homes for an on average wage of about $8-10/hour. The catch is that you've got to invest time in their screening and training and then you have to pay out of your own pocket to make sure that your computer is up to date, that you have all the applicable software and that you have a broadband connection and perhaps a second phone line too.

The biggest catch? You may be able to work from your own home but you're basically under house arrest while you're working from your own home for these companies. You have to stay in your house at all times on your shift even if it is a nice Saturday to go wash the car or go to Wal-Mart. You can't go mobile with it, in other words. If customers calling you hear any phone static or babies crying in the background, you can kiss your job good-bye real fast.

So.. the question is... do you really want to invest all that time and effort in training and possibly have to worry about upgrading your computer among other things.... all for just $8-10/hour? I'd say you'd be better off to go work your way up at McDonald's.

Parting shot: Those surveys for money thing are a joke. Think about it... have you ever heard of anyone who has made any kind of money off that kind of work, let alone got rich off it? They have scam written all over them.

Medical transcription. You need to take a course and it takes about a year to get pretty good. However, after that you can get a job making decent money fairly easily. I did it when my children were young and it worked out great for me. You can look for jobs on medical transcription sites and get one from anywhere in the country since all the work is done on the computer and transmitted via web or downloads. They also have different shifts you can work- or full or part time. It is the only way I know that is truly legit. Some companies even offer benefits and direct deposit. You can even learn it online. Good luck.

Hello there Dudette,

What computer skills do you have? There are NO LEGIT get rich quick, work on computer gigs out there. There are a bunch of shifty one, like ebay, and those sorts of things.

Depending on your skill level, there are jobs that will allow you to become a tele-worker. You may have to go into the office from time to time to let them know you are alive, but you can pretty much work anywhere, and unfortunately EVERYWHERE you are!

This is the wave of the 21st century. We will not have the "office" anymore. We can work in our bathrobes.

I don't know how much income you are looking for, but there are really good surveys that you can do. Some can pay up to 150 per survey. You just have to look around.

Most of the "Work at home on the computer" jobs are scams. They might make money for someone, but it's not you. Be very careful if they want you to pay fees for "supplies", "materials", "leads", etc.
