It is not a better alternative than the local community college. University of Phoenix is not well accepted by most employers. If I was you, I would attend the community college and then transfer to a university. If you can only attend online, then inquire about schools that have online programs. Try to stay away from for-profit online schools.

First, note that a community college cna offer certificates and associates degrees, but a University will offer a bachelor's or Master's degree.
I have attended UoPhx as a Student and have also taught there for a couple of years.
UoPhx is an accellerated program. This means you'll do a semester's worth of work in five weeks. (Well, that really depends on the instructor I guess.) The programs are designed for "the working adult." You will complete units faster through UoPhx than at a community college, but at a steep price.
I had several fantastic instructors, and I had several instructors that were a complete waste of time. I found that when teaching there, many of the students just wanted a degree and didn't care about learning. Unfortunately, many of the instructors allowed this attitude to exist.
If I had to do it again, I would have picked a different school but wouldn't have chosen a community college.

I attended UOP for a full year and was sucked in by the ability to go online and take classes,,,you are accepted very quickly,, I started within a week of signing up. My financial aid was still being worked out when I started,,,I didn't realize how expensive it was until a I got my first statement. Your classes will run about a thousand or so per class. It is outlandish how much it costs. I had difficulty getting answers back from counselors and advisers. I noticed a lot of "passing the buck" when it came to my financial aid. During one semester, I was in the process of renewing my financial aid, and even though my financial aid wasn't approved yet, my adviser told me to continue with my classes and to sign up for my next class. By the time my next scheduled class came, my financial aid was rejected, and I was told I would have to pay out of pocket for the class I was instructed to sign up for even though my financial aid was being processed. It was financially devastating. I went to the BBB and appealed, and the BBB sided with me saying UOP was unethical. So under no circumstances could I ever recommend going to UOP. I am now in a Community College and am able to do online classes.
I wish you luck, it is a difficult decision, but consider a community college or real university!

If you are working now and want to keep your current job but be able to say you have a degree, U. of Phoenix is fine. If, however, you are looking to start a career, or to change jobs, the community college is better-respected by most.

if u are going to get financial aid..u need to know that they are screwing their students with it. they are supposed to send you whatever is left after paying tuition and they are not..they are keeping it for the "future" expenses..This is supposed to be a good school just know that students are having problems with them. no school is better than a local community college/4 year school..and online classes are tough..they have a lot of drawbacks to them.
