This page has some good suggestions for humanely taking care of a rat problem in your home:

I've had very good success live trapping and releasing mice in my home, and I'm sure you could easily do the same with rats. If you do live trap the rats, please be sure to check the traps several times a day and release the rats promptly, approximately a mile away from your home. It is much more cruel to allow a rat in a live trap to slowly starve to death than to kill it quickly with a snap trap. Also, if you use the live traps outside, put some bedding (torn-up paper towels or cotton balls) inside the trap so the rats won't freeze to death during the night. When you release the rats, do it in an area with some sheltering bushes or plants. If you are a kind person, you might also leave a little bird seed or oatmeal for them.

The absolute cruelest traps are glue traps. Rats have been known to gnaw off their own limbs and tear off their skin in an effort to escape, as they starve or dehydrate to death or suffocate in the glue. Poison isn't any better, as the rats die slowly and painfully from internal bleeding. It can take up to a week for them to die.

It doesn't take much extra effort to be kind. You will feel better and so will the rats! Good luck!

My best experience with getting rid of rats is to buy yourself several rat traps and take a piece of raw bacon and sew ( use a needle and thread) it on where you put the bait. The rat cannot pull the bacon off the trap and will be caught easier this way. If you can find where they are getting in at you should try to close off all these places. Try to keep all food in containers until you get rid of the rats.

Do NOT use rat poison. I can not emphasize this enough!!!
Do you want flea infested vermin crawling into your walls and DYING!

Seal all holes even the small space around agas pipe or water pipe is enough use a caulking gun and inorganic material like silicone and pump into these penetrations, around ducts, door sills etc.
get every thing out of house you can (iwould trash all food), spray repellant aroud exterior, and put down many glue traps, use gloves to dispose of traps.
Bio-hazard bags best.
TO person who said cat: would you like your cat messed up with a rabies diseased rat? I would then bug bomb the house then disinfect everything, shudder.

Rats only congregate where there is food or warmth. Start by stopping their entry. Next Decon makes a poison that is lethal... to pets and humans too so be careful with it.Another approach is ultrasonic mediums available at most hardware stores (hurts their ears and they just leave. If you are really angry about it I suppose a sawed off shot gun would be effective albeit a bit messy and detrimental to your security deposit. Good Luck!

Get one of those 6 gallon drywall compound buckets and put a small piece of food in the bottom. Rats cant jump high enough to get out.

If you don't have children or pets around then get some of those mice/ rat pellets that poisen them. If you do then you can find big glue pads at the store, those also do the trick.
