I lived through that time.
It was clearly the emotional reason.
Pardoning Nixon did not go over well with the voting public.
Ford lost to Carter because America was disgusted with Washington corruption.
They voted for Carter, the ultimate outsider, The relatively unknown Governor from Georgia.

I think the major reason for his loss was the pardoning of Nixon. I know that on the news the other day they spoke highly of forgiveness and that was how Ford was regarded as to the pardon. I however think that Nixon knew what he was doing when he brought Ford into office as to the Watergate scandal. I believe the pardon was pre-planned and I think it is just another way of the gov't covering up there dirty laundry.

After Watergate, most Americans got to realize what Republicans are all about and didn't trust them with the government. Unfortunately, 4 years later Reagan lied Republicans back to the White House.

His pardon of Nixon cost him more than any of the other things you listed. It's been said that he did it to save the country from a long & drawn out trial.

He pissed many off with the pardon.
The other items listed pissed off a few and
together they cost him the election.
Gawd, what a mistake that was. Carter sucked, had no insight, was a nuclear engineer but didn't push for new reactors, gave away the Panama canal, it is hard to find anything positive about EITHER of them.

Chevy Chase and Saturday Night Live did Ford in with their dead-on parodies of him. Noone could take poor Gerry seriously after that.

Some people have said that Ford lost because he goofed during the debates and said that Poland was not under Communist rule. I doubt that was the deciding factor.

You left out the swine flu vaccination campaign. The flu didn't hit hard, some people got hurt by the vaccine, and Ford was left looking silly.

Because Carter was a fresh, down home face, with no connection to Nixon. Little did the country realize what a boof he would turn out to be.
