I think it's to protect the contestants families' identities etc.It stops the press from trying dig out dirt on their lives etc & also if any of the housemates become really unpopular it saves their wives/husbands/families from any aggro.

Probably because the say where they are from and they don't want the entire fan base inundating the participants and their families with annoying phone calls and correspondence right off the bat.

because they usually have such strange first names that the general public would find it hard to cope with an equally odd surname
