As soon as possible, if you owe the irs money they are worse than a collection agency and will hound the he*l out of you. Whatever you owe they will charge interest on the unpaid balance yearly. When I went into the Army I was 17 years old and though I didn't know it I owed them 3 dollars, this was during the Korean war and when I finally got word that I owed them the 3 dollars, interest had accumulated to a little over 20 dollars. That isn't much now but in 1952 it was big money to me.

Normally April 15 of the year after, unless the Post Office is closed that day in which case it's the first day the Post Office is open after April 15.
Some answerers erroneously mention filing for an extension to pay. While you can get an automatic extension (4 more months I believe) that is an extension to FILE, NOT an extension to PAY. You must still pay by April 15 even if you do not file until August.

Whenever they state is your deadline. If it's 2006 income taxes then by April 15th, 2007. Also, regarding yearly income tax, never get TOO far in debt or they will slap you with a fine and tell you that you should have been paying quarterly estimates.

Unless you get an extension, or set up some sort of arrangement with them in advance, then they want their money by April 15th.
Good luck.

Trust me. They'll let you know.
And if you don't make with the money, they'll Start by taking your tax refunds, blocking your student aid, and work their way up to taking 10% of everything you earn to satisfy the debt.
