I don't think they're essential: some countries' citizens have proven that they aren't prepared for freedom if they haven't grown up with it. This is evident in countries that were once under dictatorial or highly controlled rule and shifted to democracy too quickly (former socialist/communist countries, theocracies, etc).
That said, I think individual freedoms give the citizens a far more vested interest in their own well-being and future. Self-determination and freedom both require responsibility and discipline. They must be earned and learned for them to be proper rewards.
Regardless, I think every government ought to aim for allowing their citizens guaranteed individual freedoms and equip their citizens for the responsibility. I also think that countries that brag about the importance of freedom ought to actually encourage freedom rather than increase restrictions.

Definitely. Although there should be limits, individual freedoms are essential for any country or culture in the modern era. Yes, because it ensures equality better than any other form of government. Justice cannot be subject to the personal whims of a dictator.

No.
Because when somebody talks about "individual freedoms" I don't even know what they are talking about.
Freedom of religion? Yes, I do think that is necessary.
Freedom of speech? Yes, that is even more important.
Freedom to have an abortion? (Roe v. Wade) No, I don't think that is necessary.
Freedom to have sex? (Lawrence v. Texas) No, I can live like a monk.
Freedom to live in a household as an extended family? (Moore v. East Cleveland) No, I can't see why that is needed.
The right to be ignorant of whether or not most of your elected officials believe in God? (Any decision purporting to separate church from state) No, I think that is just plain dumb.

Yes. Without them, it's more of a hive than a society.
