I am interested in features, benefits, brands and the requirements to begin treasure hunting. I'm interested in going to beaches, parks, demolish sites, etc. I'm looking for a detector that will find the most variety of items.

The detector of choice for me is "TESORO" toltec 100. I've used this machine for 13 years. It is still going strong! Anything with the Tesoro name on it is worth buying. It takes time to get to know your machine be patient. I have hunted many places and the best sites are places with civil war history. Check local library and word of mouth. I've paid my detector off many times with my finds. The best thing I know to tell you is to go buy a Tesoro and get to hunting!! GOOD LUCK HOPE YOU FIND GOLD.

don't buy a "stick" you can get those free from trees, and you will have just as much luck.
get a reliable name brand and try it out before the final purchase. walmart and box stores have detectors starting about $100. stay away from these. get a good metal detector, that is from a dealer that doesn't sell toilet paper or pet food as a sideline.
I'm also new to the hobby- bought mine on eBay in march, had it a month before i could even dig in the ground in this area. I've found over 150 coins- 7 rings- many ea rings- and my share of junk... not bad for a bit of spare time- and some great excorcise. i can use it i'm 64 years old and retired.
there are many great brands out there mine is made by whites, it's a dfx model, my brother has an xlt and we're very satisfied...
watch out these are very addicting. hope this helps. I LOVE IT....

I agree with robrr03 .I have a whites also. Some beaches here in NC have banned metal detecting and the parks well they kinda frown on it unless you are using a probe.Seek out old abandon home sites, old country stores and talk to senior citizens in your town they will be able to tell you where the groves, old swimming holes and most other old places where the towns people got together. My grandmother who is 87 pointed out the places where I have found the most valuables.I constantly scope out areas while driving to treasure hunt.Good Luck,Have Fun and Happy Digging

walmart has a basic model for metal detectors for finding loose change and etc.it depends how serious you are in buying a metal detector,go online the farther down you want to detect the more costly it will be.
