i'm really into alot of the current indie bands and alternative rock right now but can anyone recommend some cool 70's and 80's rock bands to check out that aren't too hardcore rock but still different and interesting to listen to especially all-girl bands. thanks in advance.

You know about the Go-Gos, right? And the B-52s? If not, you might want to check them out.

Back in the day there weren't that many "indie" bands, because the DIY ethic was just begining. But, there were a few record labels (Stiff, IRS, etc.) that dealt in lots of punk, and subsequently indie rock. Here's some of my favorites:

The Pretenders
The Runaways
Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
Siouxie & The Banshees
X Ray Spex
Nick Lowe
Ramones
New York Dolls
Elvis Costello
Scandal
Blondie
The Go Go's
B-52's
The Bangles
Berlin

It would help if you told us a little more about what kind of music you like now. Indie is a very wide category. hmm 70's and 80's rock. If you like t5he Lady's try a little Joan Jett and the black hearts. Blondie is great and had a hand in the creation of hip hop. try some Iggy pop, a little bowie. and a personal favorite Warren Zevon. for good 80's hair metal cant beat white snake, or Scorpions.

Here are three of the more unusual bands -

Amy Mann did a solo album called Welcome Home.
Shakespere's Sister had an album called Sacred Heart
Roxy Music - Avalon (Not female voices)
Brian Ferry - Bete Noir (Not female Voices)
Pure Moods Vol. 1,2,3 are compilations.

These are all pretty unusual. You can listen to sound clips and read reviews at Amazon.com.

Let us know what you ended up liking.

I liked the Runaways-it had Joad Jett and Lita Ford. Both went on to become solo artists on their own.Kinda hard. Aimee Mann rocks too. Berlin was always popular.
