If a system is falling in the gravitational field then it is only under the conservative force "GRAVITATION".it is accelerating so its mechanical energy is increasing as the time passes.

the correct statement would be...............

"If a system is isolated from ALL EXTERNAL forces, then the total mechanical energy must remain constant"
AND THIS IS CALLED THE WORK ENERGY THEOREM.
