Stock horsepower is 296 for a 1999 996. Most 1999's are not stock. Our 2001 has an intake, exhaust and chip upgrade. Probably in the 325 hp range. If you are comparing to other cars, remember that speed does not relate directly to horsepower. Porsche does an incredible job transferring engine power to the wheels. Also, since the engine is over the rear wheels, traction is superb and most of the power is usable.

I just drove a 2003 Buick Regal GS with a supercharged 3.8l V-6. It made me laugh, because the car breaks the tires free at the light and chirps the tires at 30 MPH. Yes, the engine has power, but it does not have good traction, hence it cannot accelerate like it should.
