Well, you can try a couple of things....there are CD/DVD drive cleaning discs that you can buy and try. It's also possible that the driver for your drive is corrupted. To try to remedy that, use the Hardware Device Manager...go to that particular drive in the listings, right click on it, and choose "Uninstall". Once that's done, exit, and reboot. Upon rebooting Windows should recognize the drive as "new hardware" and reinstall the driver for it. Then try another blank disc.
If you've gone that far and the drive still isn't recognized as a burner, then it's probable that you'll have to have it replaced. Good luck.

Go to device manager, click on the "+" by the dvd/cd drive. In the drop down right click your cd device. Click uninstall. When it asks you "are you sure you want to uninstall?", click yes. Close device manager and restart your computer. When Windows starts "found new hardware" will be displayed and the drivers will be loaded. If that doesn't work, you probably need to replace the cd drive.

According to me it is a defective CD Drive. Or simply try updating the drivers. If that does not work change the burning software. Preferably use Sonic.

Make sure you download the latest driver from Dell's website, Log in, and let Dell's software diagnose which hardware is installed. Their website will point you to the right drivers. Then follow Boogians advice.
