Nearest tenth? Of a yard? Of an Inch?

In approximate terms :

Area = 2.598 times side squared (or 2.6 times - to the nearest tenth)

ie 2.6 x 8 x 8 = 166.4 square yards.

solve for area of the triangle having 8 yds sides;
multiply by 6

A=1/2 b x h; h = sqrt (8^2 - 4^2) or h = 4 sqrt (3)
so A = 1/2 (8) (4 sqrt (3))
A = 16 sqrt (3) , this is the area of 1 triangle

Area of hexagon = 6 x A
= 6 x 16 sqrt (3)
= 166.1 sq yds

Hi,

A regular hexagon actually is made up of 6 equilateral triangles. To find the area of an equilateral triangle, use the formula Area = side^2 * radical (3) divided by 4. With sides of 8 yards, the area of one triangle with sides of 8 is Area = 8^2 * radical(3)/4 =27.7128 square yards in each triangle. So with 6 of these triangles the area of the hexagon is 6 * 27.7128 = 166.3 square yards, to the nearest tenth.

I hope that helps.
