Depends on which phone you have. My wife has the RAZR V3m and it accepts up to 1GB of memory via microSD card. I have a Motorola V325 and it doesn't accept external memory.

The one that I have doesn't. Mine is an LG. What it does is it takes memory off the computer though the USB connection, or stores pictures from a built in camera, or of from what I call wireless shop which you can shop for backgrounds or ring tones + more.
Hate to brake it to ya, but from what I know, ya can't get your pictures back. I've been in your situation. Try going to a local VERIZON WIRELESS store near you for help.
