I do not know who told them they were. I worked for over 30 years and paid for my own, which is what everyone does. You should see what one woman wrote when I just asked a simple question on Yahoo answers, like if we were going to get our checks on the third since the post office has been closed for several days.check it out. You will see my explanation about why I was concerned about it,too. Also, a poor person like myself can not always ration the money because we have so many unforeseen circumstances coming up, like car trouble, appliances needing fixed, because we don't have newer cars and aplliances like everyone else. I did not understand why she was so ticked! So I went down to her level. I know I shouldn't have, but I put her down, and that is where she made a remark about helping with my medicine or check or something. Check it out, it is about motherhood, and not being the type to give her life so her kids could live, etc. So what would you like to say to people like that?

Like I said, I paid taxes for many years, so it is not just a thing of workers paying taxes today for other people. Whoever is working now and paying taxes, you will get it when you draw ss, disability or whatever.

If the taxes are long gone now, remember, that those taxes we paid back then have probably benefitted you younger ones in some way today, even if not in the future. You have it easier today than we did, probably because of all the millions everyone paid.

I remember when I was working, thinking about the taxes going to other places, and that ss would probably not be around when I got there. But guess what. Accidents happen. I cannot work now because of it the accident. You can't think that it will not happen to you. Nobody knows. I did not expect it either. I know the same exact money that I paid when I was working is not the same I am getting now, but what each person pays in eventually goes toward their ss. Type into the search bar-Disability where does the money come from? Even if you do not have an accident or need ss, then consider yourself blessed and don't complain about paying out and not getting back. You will be in a lot better shape if you do not have to draw it.

Ignore her you do not have to explain to anyone about your social security benefits.

People like that are ignorant, greedy and have no compassion for anyone but themselves. Even if you show them the check as well as you total social security contribution, they will still be resentful.

The irony is they too will accept the money when it's their time to collect.

I will add you to my prayers tonight.

You situation is certainly a sad one and unfortunately all too common.

However, the fact is that Social Security and related medical benefits are not a like an insurance policy. The taxes paid by those who are working are going right out to those collecting, of course minus a hefty administrative cost. The SSA admits that it is in financial trouble.

"railroad benefits, like social security benefits, are not contractual and may be altered or even eliminated at any time" - United States Railroad Retirement Board v. Fritz, 449 U.S. 166, 174, 101 S.Ct. 453, 459 (1980)

You can't change other people's attitude, but you can change your reaction to them. Live your life the way you want to live it. Change the things you can change, and accept what you cannot change. Find something you can do (not necessarily employment) despite your disability. Do not let it define who you are. My docs wanted to get me on disability for my depression. I refused. That was not going to be who I was for the rest of my life. I suffered for years, yet now have a successful career. Granted there may be some physical things you cannot change, but you sound like you are getting way too worked up about one person's opinion. Putting her down in return makes you sound no better than her. You don't even know her, so why let her anger you so much? Not that you would know, but motherhood is not as easy as most men think it is. Besides, judging from your Q&A, you have some family issues of your own you are struggling with, and probably a lot of anger toward women in general cuz of what your ex did to you. Life is tough, we all know that, but knocking others down (and now trying to get others to back up your opinion) to make yourself feel better is an immature way to cope. You are wasting way too much time on this whole issue!

NO, you didn't pay your own. Your taxes paid for whoever was receiving benefits at that time. That money is long gone. The checks you get now ARE coming from those of us still paying taxes. I don't expect social security to exist if i ever retire.

I would like to tell her to become more educated and understand how things really work before you feel you have the right to insult someone like that. Maybe she needs a friend. In my experience those who are that hateful usually are having alot of problems of their own and say mean things to other people to try to make them selves feel better or more in control of their own short comings.
