it hangs at the bottom and is lifeless
its color is bad
the its side floating and then dead
If you don't want it to suffer- put it with water in a freezer bag and then freeze it- that is a painless way to die. We have done it many many times. Then throw him out on trash day.

when it stays on the bottom of the tank and all of it's fins are limp and it doesn't eat...sorry for your possible loss.

You can tell when it's sick, but telling sick from dying is nearly impossible. Take a look at this link.
