During the 1700's in France, I read a story about two scientists, one of which had been convicted of treason or some other trumped up charge.
At any rate, the two scientists decided to explore this very question, when the one was about to get his head chopped off. He told his colleague that he would blink as many times as he was able to do so after his head was separated from his body.
Final count was something like 11 blinks or so.

When you are decapitated, the nerves from your brain are cut. When they are cut, your brain can nolonger send comands to your body. Therefore, once you are decapitated, your body is dead also.
