Why do the people who question the US always one way or another seem to get around to the "well if the US wasn't such a bully then 9/11 wouldn't have happened" argument. It's like they relish in the killing of innocent civilians. I've even seen a few smiling and laughing about it......and one was a police officer!!! Don't they realize that it's really cold and callous to take joy in others misery? What sort of response should I give to these people??? Have you ever experienced this?

Regrettably, the people you are referring to are those who back a particular political viewpoint or agenda that is too weak to stand on its principles or facts, so it must rely on the impact value of emotional ploys. Since these people have no credibility on their own, they try to gain credibility by being self critical. They think that by "admitting" or "confessing" that the 9-11 attacks were brought on by the actions of US policy, then they will gain allies and credibility abroad with those who oppose US interests.
What they fail to realize is that the people behind the 9-11 attacks and other terrorist attacks over the last 30 years or so hate the USA, not as much for its actions as for what it stands for. Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, equal rights, etc. are contrary to the fundamental beliefs of islamic extremists.
