Four times. Adams in 1824, Hayes in 1876, Harrison in 1888, and Bush in 2000. Adams' actually won in the House of Representatives because the multi-candidate field denied anyone an Electoral College win, but he still belongs on this list because he finished second in the popular vote.

Actually, if you look at the electoral college, it works very well. It balances the population against the area(sq. mileage) of the country represented.

It must not be working too bad as there have only been two times that this has happened in 65 or so elections.

Truman Vs Dewey was not one. But there are five instances including 2016. This is a terrible site for accurate answers.

the first time was truman vs dewey. I think we can get rid of the electorial college now.

Once in 2000 but then again the winner did not win anything they were appointed
