More than four?

1. He was the first to sail across the Atlantic Ocean and return as to tell about his voyage
2. He "discovered" the America's: New World for Europe
3. He certainly put some thoughts to the idea the world was "flat"
4. He discovered new peoples, civilizations
5. He started the path to the near extermination of native peoples in the "New World"
6. His discoveries were simple: important plants, food crops
7. He located enough gold to make others follow
8. He, well his Spanish ships took the Catholic religion to America and then destroyed native cultures and civilizations and they burned the Mayan books.
9. He carried disease to the "new world" killing perhaps millions
10. The "gold" that was discovered helped Spain become a greater power in Europe, created more wars.
11. But it all was going to happen anyway within a few decades of 1492, as the other nations were also exploring the oceans

Spain failed in their American ventures, England was successful:
England cultivated the resources, Spain and others just took all they could.

Although we celebrate this man as if he did something great, all he did was discover the Bahamas. When he did reach America, he became a small scale tyrant. Taxing Native Americans and harming them in unspeakable ways when they couldn't pay the hefty fees.

He showed the rest of Europe that the two continents were ripe for the taking by those who had no opposition to being very ruthless.

If Columbus truly meant what many think he did to this country, one might imagine it would be named after him, but it is not. That honor belongs to Amerigo Vespucci.

1. Took credit for discovering America when there are signs there were people already living here centuries before. Vikings, anyone?

2. Brought syphilis to the Native Americans.

3. Did not find the fountain of youth or streets paved with gold like he promised the Queen. She was really counting on the fountain of youth, too.

4. Enslaved some folk and took them from their families for ever when he sailed back to Portugal.
