Is it safe to write on the top of a CD-R disk with a "Sharpie" Pen or will the ink damage the info burned to the CD-R? If it will damage the information on the disk, how long will that take? To be clear I am not talking about commercially produced CD-ROM disks but with a CD-R that I have burned information to. If a Sharpie is not safe, is there a writing implement that is or should I use labels?

Sharpies are perfectly safe.

One good thing to do is to smell the tip of a Sharpie. Remember that smell.

DON'T use anything like a "Magic Marker" which is discernable by the "solvent" kind of smell.

Both the markers with "solvent" and the Sharpies can easily be told from one another by their smell.

I have also used labels over the Sharpie lettering with no problems. Just buy quality labels when you purchase them. Select Avery, CD Stomper, or similar products. Don't buy cheap ones or you may end up with "label" problems.

Hope this helps

yes, it's safe to use the sharpie, it's better off than the labels becasue as time goes on, there is wear and tear on the labels, which case the ends of the sticcky parts to stand up, which can get stuck in your drive, and u will end up with not just a messed up cd, but a messed up drive.

Sharpies are great for the outside of CD's. I have been using them for years.

Having worked for years labeling data/photo storage cd's, Sharpies Extra-fine are my best friend!! ;) I like the black sharpies color doesn't fade one bit.

Perfectly safe!

I haven't had a problem with Sharpie's or those acid-free pens used for scrapbooking.

Yes. They are suggested as acceptable for cd's and dvd's. I wouldn't put lables on the disk.

Hope that helps

Yes, just don't write on the side the data is on. (Write on the same side the manufacturer has their logo on) I do it all the time.
