Some bettas are always docile, but it sounds like this is new for your little guy, so that's not a good sign. I don't know how old he is (and it's really hard to tell with fish), so I don't know if it's most likely that he'll die soon, but the life span of a betta is about 2-3 years (although some people have had theirs live for more than 5). Whenever it looks like my bettas are sick or are not lively, I spray a few drops of "BettaFix Remedy" into the bowl and it seems to help a lot. You should try to pick some up. Hope that works and best of luck to your fish!

A betta will lose color, energy, and interest in food in situations where it is stressed out, unhappy, or sick.

My first guess would be that your betta is too cold. If the temperature in its tank drops below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, a betta will clamp its fins, lose some color, and not move around too much. They are tropical fish; they need a tank temp of 78-82 degrees Fahrenheit.

If your tank temp is fine, my next guess would be that his water parameters are bad. If your betta is in a small unfiltered tank or bowl, do a full water change. Make sure to add, at the very least, something to dechlorinate the new water. If you're willing to spend a little more, I would suggest using NovAqua+ and Amquel+, as this removes or neutralizes many materials toxic to your fish. Check to make sure the pH is around 7.0, and that the ammonia and nitrates level isn't too high.

If you have awesome water parameters and your temp is fine, then my next guess would be that your betta is getting bored or depressed. If it's a male (I'm assuming so), try placing a mirror beside the tank for 15-20 minutes a day. He'll have fun flaring at himself, and it'll cheer him up a bit. If you're feeling really gung-ho, go out and buy him a new neighbor betta! Remember - don't put two males in the same tank. But two tanks next to each other is fine. They can keep each other company.

Finally, if none of that works, I would guess your betta is getting sick. It's fairly difficult to diagnose what's going on at this point, but keep an eye on him! If you have a small unfiltered tank, do a full water change. If he continues to get worse, please check this site http://www.bettatalk.com/betta_diseases.htm to diagnose your betta.

Good luck! With care and patience, I'm sure your betta will be happy and healthy once more.

Mine turned pale, then I realised I was accidently feeding him too much. You're probably overfeeding. ((Mine died soon after...T__T)) May also be the water, you could try cleaning it.
